The officers and trusteess of the Peekskill Museum thank you for your visit to the Herrick House. We hope we have peaked your interest in our house-museum, Peekskill,
and its History and people. We expect you to return again and again.
(Please see descriptive remarks below video.)
The above images are as follows but not necessarily in order.
The Front Garden, During the Victorian era, it was important for the "well-to-do" families to display brightly colored flowers visible from the street.
These not only called attention to the residence, but were also used by the lady of the house to brighten up the interior. Some of the bulbs planted here are (3) three generations old. The original architectural rendering,'
from the office of William Rutherford Mead, shows a lady in the front yard waving a handkerchief, surrounded by flowers.
Around the edge of the property, to the west and north, are various plaques, tablets and other artifacts. These Plaques and tablets in the back lawn have special meaning. For example, a monument dedicated
to the first woman President of the Peekskill Museum, Pamela Louise Smith. Various other such as dedication of Peekskill, the friendly town. These came to the Museum from the many parks throughout the city,
as the land was used for other purposes. Most of them erected by The Friendly Town Association, during the 30's, 40's and 50's. Note the old mill stone recovered from McGregory Brook,
large pice of emery from the local emery mine and the stone carriage steps.
The picture of the lawn in the rear with a few chairs. An excellent location for an outdoor event.
Be sure to note there are several steps to enter the Museum. There are 4 at the curb, then several more to the front entrance. Once inside there are 2 staircases to reach the 2nd floor. The 3rd floor is presently not accessible to the general public, which contains five walk-in rooms, now used for storage. Included on the 3rd floor is the Turret Room. So named for the shape of the room when viewed
from the inside or the outside. One of these rooms contains a mantle and possibly a fireplace. This room most likely used as spare bedroom.
The handicap ramp is always available and the 1st floor can be accessed easily with a wheelchair.
Parking is limited so please arrive early to get a good spot. Or arrive late and park in the street out front.
We will be adding more about the rooms, and the grounds at a later date!
