Peekskill Museum
The restoration project
The celebration of the grand re-opening, re-dedication of the Peekskill Museum / Herrick House Renovation was attended by many of the museums's supporters.
To read more about it, please go to the Events page.
We are very happy to report that the Museum Restoration project has been completed on time and on budget and that all restoration work was of the highest quality and conforms to the
original 1874 specifications of the building. We were told the museum would begin photographing the interior and new photos should begin appearing in Febuary, 2009, Well, it's now May 2009,
3 months later and all we have to show you are the 7 pictuers we've posted. We apologize but apparently the museum is run by volunteers and beside being busy to present the city with the
re-dedication, there seems to leave little time to acquire the photos. We hope to have interior pictures and perhaps some newer outside pictures as well. But maybe this will stimulate you to
visit us instead of relying on these pages. We look forward to your visit.
The museum has undergone an approximately a half million dollar renovation which the then Governor Pataki and our other government leaders including
John G Testa former Peekskill Mayor, all had a hand in acquiring the necessary funds to achieve this great task. The Museum restoration is now complete. The painting, the redoing of the windows,
the inside painting too, all has been completed and we
are very pleased to say when the weather improves we will be taking some photos of the completed exterior and post them here. The interior of the museum will be more interesting but we need to update the
exhibits and reorganize the rooms before pictures will be available. Everything was moved to allow for the removal and restoration of the windows throughout the building.
We are currently cleaning and rearranging everything. This will take a while but will be ready for our Spring event when we stage a major event to celebrate the completion of the exterior restoration.
The 100s of pictures we mentioned as having are mostly photographs that were taken to document the technical details of the restoration of the exterior of the building.
As the weather improves more pictures of the completed exterior will be added. The interior of the museum will be more interesting but we need to update the exhibits and reorganize the rooms.

Considering the limited staff available to accomplish the mountain of work that was needed to be done, we are very happy to say that the people involved in the restoration should be
applauded for all their involvement in this work. For example, they not only were fully occupied managing the $500,000 grant that was expiring on Dec. 30, 2008 but that all work and the final audit had to be submitted by the due date
or be in violation of the provisions of the grant. We are very happy to report that the project was completed on time and on budget and that all restoration work was of the highest quality and conforms to the original 1874
specifications of the building. New photographs of the interior will be taken over the next two weeks and we should start seeing the results here one of these days. No new photographs except for the 3 pictures above of the
renovation and the main picture of the front of the museum as well as 3 other pictures of the Celebration have been shared by the museum for you our visitors. We apologize that no further pictures are available.
Previously updated information
We are very pleased to announce that the painting at the Peekskill Museum is 98% complete. Also, a state-of-the-art lightning protection system to protect our
historic building and a sophisticated intrusion alarm system that includes smoke and fire detection has been added.
Not only is the inside and outside of the physical museum being renovated but the mechanics of keeping the museum in tip top shape is also being improved,
such as the key views of the work involved is also being carefully noted and will become a permanent record for future custodial maintenence of the Herrick House.
By the spring, we will have extensive photo coverage of the details of the exterior restoration & new interior shots as well.
We realize that some of our web pages offer photos that may be faded and pixilated. This web site will be greatly improved with the addition of the exterior & interior photos
of the newly renovated museum.
The Interior scheme
The major restoration is
still underway. Recently, a
new time extension was added
until December 31st, 2008.
At the moment, we have been
featuring the painting
exhibition in three downstairs
rooms. Second floor has been
closed to the public, as each
and every window is being
removed, replaced or repaired
with new pullies, glass where
necessary, cleaned sash locks,
repainting of frames and sills
... and the second floor is
still only half way finished.
The Exterior Scheme
Regarding the exterior paint
scheme - after months of meetings & deliberation in
consultation with the
restoration architect from
Albany - with a result at this
time (with four painters right
now outside on all heights of
ladders) of colors that are
bright (light green and bright
yellow, with a peculiar brown
trim color).
